Grade Level Happenings

PRE-K… We are still on the go and building great things with our Under Construction unit. We are putting on our hard hats and extending this unit into the month of December. Throughout this investigation your little builders are learning math skills that relate to building, making building plans, and building with many different materials. Pre K is under learning construction!
KINDERGARTEN… December is a special time in kindergarten, full of secrets and surprise! In addition to traditional holiday activities, we will discover holiday customs from around the world. The kindergarteners will experience holiday traditions related to Saint Nicholas Day in the Netherlands, Las Posadas in Mexico, Saint Lucia Day in Sweden, as well as Hanukkah and Kwanzaa traditions in the United States. The children will also take part in many holiday crafts, music and games to help make the season bright!
FIRST GRADE… As the busy month of December approaches, the first graders look forward to sharing seasonal stories and learning about holiday traditions. Classroom rotations will give the children the chance to spend time with each first grade teacher and participate in activities relating to math, language arts and social studies.
In language arts, the focus will center on determining text importance and sequencing events. Students will discuss these important topics through children's literature and will also have the opportunity to apply their understanding through various writing activities over the course of the month.
The relationship between addition and subtraction is so important, and students will continue to develop these concepts and practice these skills by solving addition and subtraction number stories.
We hope that your holiday season is restful and relaxing - enjoy the time with family!
SECOND GRADE… The teachers and students would like to thank the veterans who visited our classrooms and shared their experiences in the Armed Forces. We learned about different aspects of military service and some of the opportunities that are available. What an honor for us to be in the presence of real heroes!
The second grade teachers appreciated the many parents who were able to meet for conferences.
Students will continue to need parent support in the upcoming months to master basic addition and subtraction facts, to learn how to write in cursive, and to improve their reading fluency and comprehension skills. Please encourage and help your child establish routine times and places for completing homework. The time spent in developing independent work habits are wise investments in your child’s future.
The excitement for the approaching holiday season is already brewing. What a wonderful time to teach children! Their enthusiasm is contagious!
THIRD GRADE… We have so many things to be grateful for this holiday season. Our East Pike School is certainly one of them. Thank you for your help, support and encouragement. What a difference it makes in the education of “our” children.
Keep practicing those multiplication and division facts. Just practicing 5 minutes each day makes a big difference in your child’s success in Math. In ELA this month, Analyzing Characters and Visualizing are skills we have practiced recently to strengthen our reading comprehension. Identifying Sequence of Events and Determining Text Importance are the current strategies we are practicing. Students will continue to turn in their Book-It calendars to earn a free Pizza coupon.
We all hope you and your family have time to laugh, relax and enjoy each other during this holiday season.
